Typing Test

Type the passage as fast and accurately as you can. The timer starts with your first key.

Passage
Time

Every morning the tea stall at the corner opens before the sun is fully up. The owner lights the stove, washes the glasses and arranges biscuits in neat rows. Office workers stop for a quick cup, students share news about exams, and delivery riders check their phones for the next order. By nine the rush is over and the street becomes calm again. Small places like this keep a city moving in ways most people never notice.

How the test is scored

  • Net speed: correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes, the figure most tests report.
  • Accuracy: correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100.
  • Errors: each character that doesn't match the passage. Mistakes are shown in red as you type.

Example

If you type 1,000 characters in 5 minutes and 950 of them are correct, your net speed is 950 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 38 WPM with 95% accuracy.

How to get faster

  • Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;) and don't look at the keyboard.
  • Aim for 95%+ accuracy first; speed follows.
  • Practise 10–15 minutes every day instead of one long session a week.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM calculated?

By convention a 'word' is 5 characters. Net WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. Gross WPM counts all characters, including mistakes.

What is a good typing speed?

Many office jobs ask for 30–40 WPM with high accuracy. Government exams set their own speed and accuracy rules, so check the official notification for your exam.

Why can't I paste?

Pasting is blocked so the result reflects your real typing speed.
