Video to Audio

Pull the soundtrack out of a video, such as a lecture, interview or song, and save it as an audio file.

Extracted on your device; the video is never uploaded. Works for videos up to 45 minutes. WAV is lossless but large (about 10 MB per minute); MP3 at 192 kbps is about 1.4 MB per minute.

How to extract audio from a video

  1. Choose an MP4 or WebM video (up to 300 MB and 45 minutes).
  2. Choose MP3 or WAV, then click Extract audio.
  3. Listen to the result and download it.

File size

WAV at CD quality (44.1 kHz, stereo, 16-bit) takes about 10 MB per minute: a 5-minute clip is about 50 MB. That's larger than the video's compressed sound, but every editor opens it without quality loss. MP3 is constant bitrate: 192 kbps is 24,000 bytes a second, so the same 5 minutes is about 7.2 MB.

Only extract audio from videos you own or have permission to use.

MP3 files are encoded with LAME (lamejs 1.2.1, licensed under the LGPL-3.0), which is loaded unmodified as a separate file. Licence and source code.

Frequently asked questions

Which videos work?

MP4 with AAC sound (most phone and camera videos) and WebM work in all modern browsers. Some MOV and MKV files use codecs the browser can't decode.

MP3 or WAV?

MP3 is small and plays everywhere: at 192 kbps it is about 1.4 MB per minute. WAV is lossless and opens in every audio editor, but takes about 10 MB per minute. Both are made in your browser.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The sound is decoded in your browser, so private videos stay on your device.
