About UUID v4
A version-4 UUID is 128 bits, 122 of them random, written as 36 characters, for example 3f2b8c1e-9d4a-4f6b-8a2e-1c5d7e9f0a3b. The chance of two being the same is negligible, so they are safe as unique IDs without a central counter.
Generated with crypto.randomUUID(), the browser's cryptographically secure generator.
Frequently asked questions
UUID or GUID?
They are the same thing. GUID is Microsoft's name for a UUID.
Can I use UUIDs as database keys?
Yes. For very large tables, time-ordered UUIDs (v7) can index faster, but v4 is fine for most apps.
Are they stored?
No. They are generated in your browser and never sent anywhere.
