Open RAR Files (RAR & 7z Extractor)

Open a RAR or 7z file without installing WinRAR or 7-Zip. See the files inside and save the ones you need; the archive never leaves your device.

Opened on your device: the archive is never uploaded. Password-protected and multi-part archives aren't supported.

How to open a RAR file

  1. Choose your .rar or .7z file. The format is recognised from the file itself, so a wrong extension doesn't matter.
  2. The file list shows every file with its unpacked size. Type part of a name to find one in a big archive.
  3. Tap Download next to a file, or Download all as ZIP to keep the folders.

RAR, RAR5 and 7z

RAR is the format made by WinRAR. Newer archives use version 5 (RAR5), older ones version 4; both open here. 7z is the format of the free 7-Zip program. Phones and computers open ZIP files on their own but often need an extra app for RAR and 7z (recent versions of Windows 11 can read them), which is why a browser tool is handy. If you want a file that anyone can open, use RAR to ZIP.

Safe file names

Names inside an archive can try to point outside the folder they're unpacked into. The extractor cleans every name first, and it never follows links:

  • An entry called ..\..\Windows\evil.dll is saved as Windows/evil.dll, inside the archive's own folder.
  • Two files that would both be report.pdf become report.pdf and report (2).pdf, so neither is lost.
  • Symbolic links and device files are skipped and counted.

Opening an archive is safe, but a file inside it can still be harmful. Scan downloaded programs (.exe, .apk, .bat) with your antivirus before running them, as you would any download.

Limits

Archives up to 300 MB open in the browser, with at most 5,000 files, 512 MB for one file and 1 GB unpacked in total. These are checked before anything is unpacked, using the sizes the archive declares, so a tiny archive that claims to hold many gigabytes is refused instead of freezing your phone. For ZIP files, use the ZIP extractor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a RAR file without WinRAR?

Choose the file above. Your browser reads the archive and lists the files inside, and you can save any of them. It works the same on a phone, a Chromebook or a computer, with nothing to install.

Is my archive uploaded?

No. The archive is read on your device by libarchive, an open-source archive library, running inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can it open password-protected or split RAR files?

No. Encrypted archives and multi-part sets (part1.rar, part2.rar…) aren't supported. Open those with WinRAR or 7-Zip on a computer.

How big can the archive be?

Up to 300 MB, with at most 5,000 files and 1 GB once unpacked. The limits stop a small 'zip bomb' file from filling your device's memory.

Does it open 7z, TAR and GZ files too?

Yes. 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ, BZ2 and XZ archives open the same way, and so do CBR comic files, which are RAR archives.

Can I make a RAR file here?

No. RAR compression is proprietary and its licence doesn't allow other software to create RAR files. Use ZIP instead: every computer and phone can open it.
