Frequently asked questions

How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?

Write the rupees in words followed by 'Only', for example 'Rupees Twelve Thousand Five Hundred Only'. Add paise as 'and Fifty Paise' before 'Only' if needed. Start close to the left edge so nothing can be added.

What is the difference between lakh/crore and million/billion?

India groups digits as 12,34,56,789 and names them in thousands, lakhs (1,00,000) and crores (1,00,00,000). The international system groups by three: 123,456,789 is 123 million. 10 lakh = 1 million, and 1 crore = 10 million.

How big a number can I convert?

Up to ₹99,999 crore (just under ₹1 lakh crore), with paise to two decimals.
