Average Calculator

Find the average of any list of numbers, with median, mode and a weighted average.

Average (mean)
79.33
Median
81.5
Mode
85
Range
24 (66 to 90)
Sum
476
Count
6
Standard deviation (sample)
9.07

Formulas

  • Mean = sum ÷ count
  • Median = middle value of the sorted list (the mean of the two middle values when the count is even)
  • Weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ weights

Example

For 72, 85, 90, 66, 85 and 78: the sum is 476 across 6 numbers, so the mean is 79.33. Sorted, the middle values are 78 and 85, so the median is 81.5. The mode is 85, and the range is 66 to 90.

Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces or new lines, so you can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean adds all numbers and divides by how many there are. The median is the middle value when they're sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often.

How do I calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each number by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. Scores of 80 and 90 with weights 1 and 3 give (80 + 270) ÷ 4 = 87.5.

Which standard deviation is shown?

The sample standard deviation (dividing by n − 1), which is what spreadsheets return for STDEV.S.
