How to compress an image
- Choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC in Safari).
- Pick JPG or WebP and set the target maximum size in KB (200 KB by default).
- Click Compress image, check the preview, and download.
How it works
The photo keeps its width and height; only the JPEG or WebP quality changes. The tool tries a quality level, checks the file size, and narrows in on the highest quality that still fits your target, about seven attempts between 5% and 95% quality. Here 1 KB means 1,024 bytes, so a 50 KB target means at most 51,200 bytes.
When the target is too small
If even the lowest quality is too big, the tool says so. The fix is fewer pixels: a 4000 ร 3000 phone photo has 12 million pixels, while the same photo resized to 1280 ร 960 has about 1.2 million, a tenth as many, so it can reach a much smaller file. Use the Image resizer first, then compress.
Tips
- Upload forms usually want JPG. WebP is smaller and fine for websites.
- Phone photos are turned upright using their rotation data, and the saved copy doesn't carry the original's hidden details such as the location where it was taken.
- For a PDF rather than a photo, use Compress PDF to size.
