Barcode Generator

Create a scannable barcode from any text or product number and download it for labels.

Type
ABC-12345

Print at 100% scale and test with your scanner before printing labels in bulk. Retail EAN numbers must be issued by GS1.

How it works

Code 128 encodes every keyboard character. Long runs of digits are packed two per symbol (code set C), which makes numeric barcodes shorter. A checksum (the weighted sum of symbol values mod 103) is added automatically.

EAN-13 encodes 13 digits: the first digit sets the pattern of the left half, and the last digit is a check digit. For 400638133393 the check digit is 1, giving 4006381333931.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100% scale and leave white space (the quiet zone) on both sides.
  • Use black bars on a white background; coloured or low-contrast barcodes scan poorly.
  • Test with your actual scanner or phone before printing a full batch.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use?

Code 128 for internal labels, stock, shipping and anything with letters. EAN-13 for retail products that shops scan at the till; those numbers are issued by GS1 to your company.

What is the EAN-13 check digit?

The 13th digit is calculated from the first 12 so scanners can catch misreads. Enter 12 digits and it's added for you; enter 13 and we check that the last one is right.

PNG or SVG?

SVG stays sharp at any size and is best for printing and design tools. PNG is easiest for documents and spreadsheets; it's exported at double resolution.
