Rotate Image

Turn a sideways or upside-down photo the right way, or straighten a tilted horizon.

How to rotate an image

  1. Choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC).
  2. Press Rotate right or Rotate left for a quarter turn; twice for 180°.
  3. To fix a tilted horizon, move Straighten (−45° to 45°, in half-degree steps).
  4. Press Download. Undo is there if you turn too far.

How the size changes

A quarter turn swaps width and height. Any other angle needs a bigger canvas: the rotated picture fits in a box w × cos θ + h × sin θ wide and w × sin θ + h × cos θ high.

Example

A 4032 × 3024 phone photo turned right becomes 3024 × 4032. Straightening a 1000 × 800 picture by 5° needs a 1066 × 884 canvas: 1000 × cos 5° + 800 × sin 5° = 996.2 + 69.7 ≈ 1066 wide, and 1000 × sin 5° + 800 × cos 5° = 87.2 + 797.0 ≈ 884 high.

Tips

  • Rotate before you crop: crop shapes such as 4:5 or 9:16 depend on which way up the photo is.
  • A mirror image (like a selfie with backwards text) needs flipping, not rotating: use Flip image.
  • For crop, resize, filters, text and borders as well, open the Photo editor.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my photo sideways in some apps but not others?

Phones often save photos unrotated and add an orientation tag. Apps that ignore the tag show the photo sideways. This tool reads the tag first and saves the pixels the right way up, so the result looks the same everywhere.

Does rotating reduce the quality?

Turning by 90° or 180° moves pixels without changing them; only the JPG or WebP compression is redone (at 92% quality by default). Straightening by a few degrees has to blend neighbouring pixels, so very fine detail softens slightly. Save as PNG for no compression loss.

What happens to the corners when I straighten?

Turning by an angle like 3° makes the picture's corners stick out, so the canvas grows to fit and the uncovered corners are transparent (PNG, WebP) or filled with a colour (JPG). Crop them off in the Photo editor afterwards.

Can I rotate several photos at once?

Not yet: one photo at a time. Each takes a couple of seconds, and nothing is uploaded.
