Face Blur

Hide the faces of people in a photo before you post or share it, with automatic face detection and your own boxes.

Faces are found on your device with an AI face detector (MediaPipe BlazeFace); the photo isn't uploaded. Detection can miss faces that are small, turned away or partly covered, so always check and add any it missed. The outlines are not saved.

How to blur faces in a photo

  1. Choose a photo. The AI looks for faces and outlines each one it finds.
  2. Missed someone? Drag a box over their face. Tap a box to remove it, for example to keep your own face visible.
  3. Choose Blur, Pixelate or Black box, and an oval or rectangle shape.
  4. Download the photo as JPG or PNG.

How faces are found

A face detection model (MediaPipe BlazeFace, full range) checks the whole photo and, for larger photos, four overlapping quarters of it, so that small faces in group photos are big enough to spot. Detections from the different passes are merged, and each face box is made 20% bigger on every side to cover hair, ears and chin.

Example

A face found as 100 ร— 100 pixels at (1000, 1000) is hidden over 140 ร— 140 pixels starting at (980, 980). With Pixelate, that area is split into blocks of 140 รท 8 โ‰ˆ 18 pixels, each filled with its average colour; Blur instead uses a blur radius of a fifth of the box size.

Tips

  • Get permission before posting photos of other people, especially children; blurring helps but isn't a substitute for consent.
  • To keep one person sharp and blur everything behind them instead, use Blur background.
  • For crop, text and other edits, use the Photo editor.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The face detector runs in your browser and the photo stays on your device. That matters when the reason you're blurring faces is privacy.

Will it find every face?

Not always. Small faces, faces turned away, in shadow or partly covered can be missed. Always look over the result and drag a box over anything it missed before you share the photo.

Can I hide number plates, names or addresses?

Yes. Drag a box over anything you want to hide; it gets the same blur, pixelation or black box as the faces.

Which effect is safest?

The black box: it removes the detail completely. Blur and pixelation hide faces from people looking at the photo, but researchers have shown that light blurring or large pixel blocks can sometimes be partly reversed or matched, so use the black box for anything sensitive.

Does it change the rest of the photo?

No. Only the areas in the boxes are changed, and the photo keeps its full size. The outlines you see on screen are not saved.
